Event Details

On Feb. 19-20, the 277 cities that host PechaKucha events worldwide will converge to present one continuous 24-hour edition of PechaKucha Night to benefit Haiti.  Kicking off at SuperDeluxe in Tokyo, where PechaKucha Night was first conceived, the presentation wave will travel eastward, with cities presenting one after the other. Crossing all times zones and cultures, the event will be streamed live online and then finish in Tokyo the following day. Due to a 14 hour time difference with Tokyo, this event will take place on the 19th of February in DC.

Studio Number One (founded by Shepard Fairey) - of Obama HOPE fame and more - have designed the logo for Global PechaKucha Day and Brian LeBarton musical director for Beck just sent us the first PechaKucha 20x20 Music Track.  Apple Stores in London and Tokyo will be featuring Pecha Kucha presentations as a prelude to their city's events on February 20th.  Other locations to be announced.

Already presentations are being prepared (a slideshow format that allows each presenter 20 images x 20 seconds/image) - some are intended to offer hope and encouragement through stories of past disaster relief projects, while others offer simple inspiration by showing the power of great creative thinking.

All of the 2,000 presentations generated from the one-day event - what could be the world's biggest single day globally distributed conference - will be posted online at PechaKucha Presentation. All presentations will have a donate button to raise money.

All proceeds will go to Architecture for Humanity for rebuilding Haiti. AFH operates globally, and was instrumental in getting projects built after the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Katrina. The design costs for the new buildings in Haiti have been already covered so all donations will go to tangible built projects.

The beauty of the simple 20x20 format is the presentations are so easy to make and voice, so each month AFH will make updates in the 20x20 format which will be posted on line and shown at all the PechaKucha Night around the world in the coming month to show how the PechaKucha Fund is being used and to help keep the interest level high through until completion.

Washington, DC Chapter of Pecha Kucha Night: 20 slides x 20 seconds at 20:20: CAPITOL PECHA KUCHA!!

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mic to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 500 cities across the world. www.pecha-kucha.org
